dickens

today went with Tim to the Dicken's Festival that they hold every year here in our town...it is usually held outside, but, almost always raining...so, this year they had it at the convention center...I personally like it better when it is outside, feels more like a village setting that way...

we went cause Tim told me of someone that was going to playing the trombone at the festival...before Tim ever became a reporter, and more importantly with the Press Enterprise, I had religiously read a certain column written by a guy named Dan Bernstein...I like his work...when Tim started working there, he said that he had first met, and then engaged in conversation with Dan Bernstein...

the band was nice and it was very refreshing to just sit, enjoy a funnel cake and listen to some good music...

afterwards Tim introduced me to Dan and let me tell you that after he shook my hand, I entertained the notion of never washing my hand again...LOL...

he was a very nice guy, down to earth, very genuine...

had a wonderful time...

chicago

I have been to Chicago but, it has been several years...I liked the city, although it was very very busy and tons of traffic...

when I just recently pulled up my bank statement online, noticed there was a charge for train tickets in Chicago (Hyde Pk station...to be exact).,.

somehow, someone, got hold off my credit card info and charged train tickets to my account...it did get straightened out by my bank, at least on my end...I was reimbursed by my bank after filling out a fraud report...
in my way of thinking, it better have been for something very important, like going to see your sick child in the hospital in order to have this be OK...when did it become OK to steal from someone else??? and even tho I got my money back, someone had to pay it back even if it was the bank....in my mind, the money has to come from somewhere...
how did the person that used my numbers really feel the minute they were using it???

but, they must not have felt all that bad, since they got away with it the one day, they did it again the following day also...

the things you hear from old people

at Elk's...

Greg and some other gentlemen were discussing their favorite tv shows while we were seated at an Elk's dinner...they were all manly men shows, Pawn Stars, History Channel, War stories, whatever and this little old lady (I discovered later she is 89) piped up in her cute little voice, barely audible and said, "my favorite show is Lawrence Welk, do you ever watch that?" Greg said "I used to watch when I was a kid, he is long since dead..." nice of him to ruin it for her...she said that she watches it on cable...

well behaved children

this happened a while back but I have not forgotten it so decided to share...

Greg and I went to Coco's for an early dinner...they seated us in a booth right next to a woman with her 4 (yes 4) boys...now usually when Greg and I go out without kids, we don't like to sit next to kids but the restaurant was crowded and so we stayed...while we ordered our food and till the time we got our food, we did not hear a peep from those 4 boys...so, I turned around and told the mother that her children were well behaved...she in essence, told me that her children knew they had to behave when they were out or else...I told her that you don't see that too often nowdays and that I really gave her credit for raising good boys...she said that in addition to the boys, she also had a baby girl who was home with the grandma...
this is her story and I gave her a hug when she left and told her how proud I was of her...

she and her husband had been together since high school and had the 4 boys (they ranged in age of 9-3 maybe) and then she got pregnant with the baby (I think she said the baby was 2) and during her pregnancy they discovered she had breast cancer...her husband could not accept the diagnosis and LEFT her...he also quit paying child support...can you believe this??? so while she was pregnant and having to deal with breast cancer and having 4 boys, she finished up nursing school which she had already started...how cool is that??? you have to give this girl credit...she put off the cancer treatment till she graduated and got a good paying nursing job...the reason the baby was with the grandma cause the mom had just recently had the surgery and could not lift the baby...

I was totally in awe of this mom and I hope she knew how much I thought of her...not only dealing with 5 kids on her own, finishing school, dealing with breast cancer and having some of the best behaved children I have ever seen...that is an accomplishment...
